Why Consider Deleting Your Account?

As a creator, your personal account often starts as a scrapbook of family photos, holidays and everyday life. Over time, you may want to reposition yourself as a professional influencer or brand, but converting a personal account into a creator account isn’t always the smoothest route. Here are a few reasons why starting fresh might make more sense:
  • Clarity of identity: An account originally filled with personal posts can confuse new followers who expect consistent niche content.
  • Algorithm reset: If your old posts had low engagement, the algorithm may already be limiting your reach. A new account gives you a clean slate.
  • Professional polish: Starting over allows you to carefully curate your brand image from day one - your profile picture, bio, highlights and content strategy.
Of course, deleting your account isn’t the only option. Some creators choose to archive old posts and pivot their personal profile into an influencer account. This can work if you already have a strong follower base and don’t want to lose them. But if your audience is small, inactive, or mismatched with your goals, deleting and rebuilding may save you frustration in the long run.
Just make sure you consider all options before you automatically land on deleting your account.

How to Permanently Delete Your Instagram Account

Delete your account either by going directly to Accounts ownership and control settings in Accounts Centre, or doing the following:
  1. Go to your profile.
  2. Tap more options Menu in the top right.
  3. Tap Accounts Centre, then Personal details.
  4. Tap Account ownership and control.
  5. Tap Deactivation or deletion.
  6. Tap the account that you'd like to permanently delete.
  7. Tap Delete account, then Continue.
Remember, if you delete your account, you'll lose everything in it (unless you export a copy first). Temporarily deactivating it can be a less permanent solution. In this scenario, click Deactivation instead of deletion in step 5.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is deactivating an Instagram account the same as deleting it?

No, deactivating and deleting are very different, which is why it's important you choose the right option for your needs. Deactivation is temporary, meaning it hides your profile, photos, comments and likes until you log back in. Once reactivated, your account reappears exactly as you left it.
Deletion, on the other hand, is permanent. After deletion, your entire account, including content, followers and messages, is erased and cannot be recovered. If you’re unsure about leaving Instagram for good, deactivation is the safer option, as it allows you to reactivate your account if you decide/need to.

Can we delete an Instagram account anytime?

Yes, you can delete your Instagram account at any time by visiting the official deletion page. There's no specific time you need to wait to delete or deactivate your account.
While deleting your account is certainly not necessary for becoming an influencer, it can give you the feeling of a new start. If you want to temporarily disable your account - whether to change it up or reduce your screen time - consider just deactivating instead.
